Most local SEO Ottawa advice arrives as a giant audit and a monthly retainer. You don't need either to start. You need the right order.
Google has published how local ranking works, and industry surveys fill in the details. The problem is that most owners start with the wrong jobs, like posting updates every day, while their category is wrong and their hours are stale.
This is the checklist we'd hand a friend who owns a shop in Westboro or a clinic in Kanata. It runs from the highest payoff to the lowest, so work top to bottom.
Start with your Google Business Profile: the right primary category, accurate hours, and your real name and address. Then build a steady flow of Google reviews, make your name, address and phone match everywhere, and give each core service its own page on your site. Links and extra directories come last.
What actually moves local rankings in Ottawa
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search, and distance is how far you are from the searcher. Prominence is how well known you are, including links and reviews.
Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey asked 47 local SEO experts to score 187 factors. These were the top five for the map pack:
- Your primary Google Business Profile category
- Distance from the searcher
- Keywords in the business name
- A physical address in the city being searched
- Being open at the time of the search
Look at #4. If your office is in Gatineau, ranking for searches that say Ottawa is harder, and the reverse is true too.
Distance works the same way inside the city. A Barrhaven business will struggle to show up for someone searching from Orléans, no matter how good its profile is.
So what: you can't move your building. You can fix almost everything else on this list this month.
The local SEO Ottawa checklist: profile and reviews
1. Google Business Profile (this week)
- Verify your profile. Google says verified businesses are more likely to show up in search results.
- Pick the most specific primary category. Google's own example is Nail salon instead of Salon. Our Google Business Profile categories guide goes deeper.
- Set your real hours, plus holiday hours. Being open at search time is a top-five factor, but Whitespark's Darren Shaw warns that listing hours you don't keep breaks Google's guidelines.
- Add Google's predefined services. They ranked #22 in the same survey.
- Add real photos of your place, your team and your work. Google lists photos and videos in its own ranking tips.
2. Reviews (every week)
- Ask every happy customer, using a Google review link or QR code. Google suggests both.
- Aim for a steady flow, not a burst. Review recency ranked #11 and a sustained influx over time ranked #14. More in why 15 fresh reviews beat 200 old ones.
- Reply to every review. In BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey, 89% of consumers expect owners to respond.
- Never offer discounts for reviews, and never ask only your happy customers. Google prohibits both.
So what: these two blocks are most of the win. Plenty of your competitors skip half of them.
The rest of the checklist: NAP, website and links
3. NAP consistency (one afternoon)
- NAP means name, address and phone. Make them identical on your website and your profile, because HTML NAP matching your profile ranked #15.
- Claim the core listings: Apple Business, Bing Places, Yelp, YellowPages.ca and Facebook. Our guide to business directories in Canada covers which ones matter.
4. Your website (this month)
- Give each core service its own page. A dedicated page per service ranked #24 for the map pack and #2 for AI search visibility.
- Write about the neighbourhoods you really serve, like Nepean, Kanata or Orléans. Geographic relevance of your content ranked #18.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data. Google's Search Central documentation says it lets you tell Google about your hours, departments and more.
5. Links and mentions (ongoing)
- Earn local links from your business association, sponsorships, suppliers and local press. Google says prominence includes how many websites link to your business.
So what: think of your website as the tiebreaker when two profiles look alike. It's also what AI answers read.
What to skip, even if someone sells it to you
Some popular tactics barely register. Out of the 187 factors in Whitespark's survey:
- Geo-tagged photos ranked dead last, at #187.
- Keywords in your review replies ranked #182.
- Keywords in your profile description ranked #171.
- How often you publish Google posts ranked #148.
Posts and descriptions still help customers decide. They just don't move rankings much.
If an agency's plan is mostly daily posts and geo-tagged photos, ask what they're doing about your category, reviews and service pages. If you're comparing options, here's how we stack up against a traditional Ottawa SEO agency.
So what: spend your hours where the rankings are. Skip the busywork.
Local SEO FAQ
How long does local SEO take in Ottawa?
It depends on your category and competition, so be wary of anyone who promises a date. Profile fixes like your category and hours take a day. Reviews and links build over months, which is why a steady weekly routine beats a one-time push.
Do I need a website for local SEO?
You can show up on Maps without one, but it's harder. Several top factors in Whitespark's 2026 survey are about your pages, like matching NAP details and a dedicated page for each service.
What is NAP in local SEO?
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Keep it identical on your Google Business Profile, your website and major directories. Mismatches confuse customers and search engines.
Can I rank in Ottawa if my business is in Gatineau?
It's harder. Having a physical address in the city being searched is the #4 map pack factor in Whitespark's 2026 survey. Focus on searches near you and make your service pages clear about the areas you serve.
Are Google posts worth it for local SEO?
They help customers more than rankings. Frequency of Google posts ranked #148 of 187 factors in Whitespark's survey. Post when you have real news, then spend the rest of your time on reviews and your category.
