Search for business directories Canada and you'll find endless lists, plus agencies offering to submit you to every site on them. Don't bite. Most of those listings do very little.
A small set of directories does matter. They feed maps apps, AI assistants and the searches your customers already run. The rest is noise, and sometimes a cost.
Here's which Canadian listings to claim, how to keep your details consistent, and what not to waste money on.
Claim your Google Business Profile first, then Apple Business, Bing Places, Yelp, YellowPages.ca, Facebook and your BBB profile, plus one or two directories for your industry. Keep your name, address and phone identical on all of them. Skip bulk submission packages and paid upgrades you don't need.
Why directories still matter in 2026
Citations are mentions of your business name, address and phone on other sites. They'd been fading as a ranking factor, but Whitespark's 2026 survey shows why they're back: 3 of the top 5 AI search visibility factors are citation factors.
Consumer data points the same way. In BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, use of ChatGPT and other AI tools for local recommendations jumped from 6% to 45%. Apple Maps use nearly doubled, from 14% to 27%.
AI tools lean on directories to answer. BrightLocal's study of 1.9 million AI citations found Google Business Profile made up 28.5% of all citations and Yelp 8.53%. We covered that in why ChatGPT cites Yelp before your website.
So what: directories aren't mainly about links anymore. They're about being the answer.
The business directories Canada owners should claim first
Start with the platforms that power maps and AI answers. Every one of these offers a free listing.
- Google Business Profile
- Your most important listing. Every other listing should match it.
- Apple Business
- Apple replaced Business Connect with Apple Business in April 2026. It's free and controls your place card across Apple Maps, Safari and Spotlight.
- Bing Places
- Free. Bing Places support says it can pull your data from your Google profile to create or update your listing.
- Yelp
- Free to claim through Yelp for Business. In BrightLocal's AI study, Yelp showed up as a source in 80% of ChatGPT's local answers.
- YellowPages.ca
- Offers a free online listing. It also sells paid placement, which is optional.
- BBB
- BBB publishes free profiles for accredited and non-accredited businesses. Accreditation is voluntary and separate from your rating.
- Part of BrightLocal's list of top Canadian citation sites, along with the platforms above.
Then add one or two sites for your industry. Think RateMDs for clinics, TripAdvisor for restaurants or Houzz for home services. All three appear on BrightLocal's Canadian list.
So what: a short list of accurate listings beats a long list of junk ones.
NAP consistency: the boring part that counts
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Your details should match everywhere, down to the suite number.
Whitespark's survey ranks consistency on the main maps platforms, meaning Google Maps, Bing Maps and Apple Maps, at #28 of 187 map pack factors. Consistency on key directories like Yellow Pages and Yelp sits lower, at #63, so fix the big three first.
- Use the exact name on your sign. No keywords.
- Pick one address format and stick to it, including suite numbers.
- Use a local phone number you control, and use the same one everywhere.
- Update every listing when you move or change numbers. Old listings keep sending customers to the wrong place.
- Search your business name with your old phone number to find stale listings.
Mismatched details can also confuse AI assistants, which is how businesses end up with AI handing out the wrong phone number.
So what: consistency is free. Inconsistency costs you calls.
What not to waste money on
- Bulk submission packages. The number of structured citations ranked #110 of 187 in Whitespark's survey. More listings isn't the goal.
- Directories Google ignores. Colan Nielsen of Sterling Sky warns that Google is dropping many citation sites from its index, and an unindexed listing counts for nothing.
- Paid upgrades you don't need. The free YellowPages.ca listing is the citation. Paid placement is advertising, so judge it like any other ad.
- BBB accreditation just for SEO. Your free BBB profile exists either way, and accreditation doesn't change your rating. Pay only if the seal helps you sell.
- Promises of rankings from directories alone. Google says there's no way to pay for a better local ranking.
One contributor to Whitespark's survey said they no longer build more than 10 to 20 citations. That's the right mindset: fewer, better and accurate.
BrightLocal estimates each listing takes 15 to 20 minutes to build by hand, so the core list is an afternoon of work. If you're weighing an agency for it, here's how we compare to a traditional Ottawa SEO agency.
So what: spend an afternoon, not a retainer.
Directories FAQ
What are the most important business directories in Canada?
Start with Google Business Profile, Apple Business, Bing Places, Yelp, YellowPages.ca, Facebook and BBB. Then add one or two sites for your industry, like RateMDs for clinics or TripAdvisor for restaurants.
Are business directory listings free in Canada?
The core ones are. Google, Apple Business, Bing Places and Yelp are free, YellowPages.ca offers a free online listing, and BBB publishes free profiles. Paid upgrades are optional advertising.
What is NAP consistency?
It means your business name, address and phone number are identical everywhere they appear online. Whitespark's 2026 survey ranks consistency on Google Maps, Bing Maps and Apple Maps at #28 of 187 map pack factors.
Do directory citations still help local SEO?
Yes, but more for AI visibility than for map rankings. Whitespark's 2026 survey found 3 of the top 5 AI search visibility factors are citation factors, while the sheer number of citations ranked low for the map pack.
Should I pay for BBB accreditation?
Only if the seal helps you win customers. BBB publishes profiles for accredited and non-accredited businesses, and accreditation is voluntary and separate from the rating.
