Google Maps Ranking Factors: what actually matters in 2026.

Google names three ranking factors. Local SEO experts score 187. Here is what both say, sorted into the factors you control and the ones you should stop worrying about.

Q&A → ASK MAPSOPEN NOW?

Search for Google Maps ranking factors and you'll drown in lists. Some are useful. Most mix real signals with myths, and almost none tell you what to do first.

So let's use two sources that matter. First, Google's own words. Second, the 2026 Whitespark survey, where 47 local SEO experts scored 187 factors.

Then we'll sort everything into what you control and what you don't. If you run a local business in Ottawa or anywhere in Canada, this is the short version of a very long debate.

Quick answer

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. In Whitespark's 2026 expert survey, the top map pack factors are your primary Google Business Profile category, your distance from the searcher and keywords in your business name. You can't control distance, but you can control your category, hours, reviews and website.

Google Maps ranking factors in Google's own words

Google's help page on improving your local ranking names three factors.

Relevance
How well your profile matches what someone searched. Complete, detailed business info helps Google make the match.
Distance
How far you are from the searcher. If they don't share a location, Google uses what it knows about where they are.
Prominence
How well known your business is. Google says this includes how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have.

Google also says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. And it's blunt about one thing: there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Ads are a separate lane. Local Services Ads can sit at the top of the page, but paying for them doesn't change your organic map position.

So what: everything you do should make you more relevant or more prominent. Distance is the one lever you don't get.

What 47 local SEO experts rank highest in 2026

Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors report is the closest thing the industry has to a census. It's still expert opinion, not Google data, and Whitespark says plainly that none of the experts have access to Google's algorithm.

Here are the top 10 map pack factors, with their scores:

  1. Primary Google Business Profile category (227)
  2. Distance from the searcher (225)
  3. Keywords in the business name (223)
  4. Physical address in the city of the search (213)
  5. Business is open at the time of search (189)
  6. High Google star rating (181)
  7. Address showing on the profile (176)
  8. Additional profile categories (173)
  9. Number of Google reviews with text (170)
  10. Correct map pin placement (165)

Two things stand out. Being open when someone searches is a new factor, and it went straight to #5. Darren Shaw says rankings start to slip about an hour before closing time.

Review recency sits at #11, just outside the top ten. That lines up with what we wrote about fresh reviews beating old ones.

So what: most of the top ten live on your Google Business Profile. That's where your first hour goes.

What you control, and what you don't

You control
Primary and additional categories, hours, services, photos, review requests and replies, your website pages and your NAP.
You influence
Star rating, review count, links from other sites and how people engage with your profile. Click-through rate from the map pack ranked #13.
You don't control
Where the searcher is standing, and whether your address sits inside the city they searched.

Service-area businesses have a wrinkle. The survey puts an address showing on your profile at #7, but Darren Shaw thinks the ranking drops he's seen after an address is hidden look more like a bug. If you serve customers at their homes, follow Google's rule and hide your address anyway.

Behaviour signals are rising too. Whitespark says review and behavioural signals gained the most importance in 2026, which is why we wrote about GBP messaging as a ranking signal.

So what: stop worrying about where the searcher is. Win everything else.

Overrated factors to stop paying for

Some tactics get sold hard and score low. From the same list of 187 factors:

  • Geo-tagged photos: dead last, at #187.
  • Keywords in your replies to reviews: #182.
  • Keywords in your profile description: #171.
  • How often you publish Google posts: #148.

The #3 factor is a trap too. Adding keywords that aren't part of your real name breaks Google's guidelines and can get you suspended, so read how suspensions work and how to fix one before you try it.

One more thing. Google's AI features, like Ask Maps, read the same profile, reviews and website. Want to see where you stand? Run the free website roast for a quick read on your Google data.

So what: if a plan leads with geo-tagged photos, it's not a plan.
