Google Business Profile Suspended? How to fix it in 2026.

A suspended profile is fixable. Here is why Google suspends listings, how to tell a soft suspension from a hard one, and the exact reinstatement steps Google wants you to follow.

Google Business Profile suspended. That's the email no owner wants to open. Calls slow down, your listing looks unclaimed or vanishes from Maps, and there's no phone number at Google to yell at.

Here's the good news. Most suspensions trace back to a short list of guideline breaks, and most can be fixed. The bad news is that panic makes it worse, because owners edit everything at once, open a second profile, or file three appeals in one afternoon.

This guide covers why profiles get suspended, how to tell a soft suspension from a hard one, the evidence Google asks for, and how to stay off its radar. It's written for Ottawa and Canadian owners, but the rules apply everywhere.

Quick answer

Google suspends a Business Profile when it thinks the profile breaks its guidelines, usually through a keyword-stuffed name, a virtual office or PO box address, or duplicate listings. Fix the violation first, then file one appeal in Google's appeals tool with documents that match your business name and address. Google says decisions can take up to 5 business days.

Why Google suspends Business Profiles

Google doesn't hide the rules. Its guidelines for representing your business say you must avoid prohibited content, represent your business accurately and follow its product rules if you want to avoid a suspension.

In practice, these are the breaks that get owners in trouble:

  • Extra words in your name. Taglines, service keywords or neighbourhoods added to your real name. Google says this can get your profile suspended.
  • An address you don't really use. Virtual offices and PO boxes aren't eligible. A co-working desk only counts with signage, staff and customers during business hours.
  • A visible address on a service-area business. If customers don't come to you, Google wants your address hidden.
  • Duplicate profiles. Google allows one profile per business location.
  • Links and phones you don't control. Google bans website links that redirect and wants a phone number under your direct control.
  • Too many edits at once. Sterling Sky has seen edits trigger suspensions, especially in spam-heavy categories like locksmiths and garage doors.

There's a Canadian trap too. Google doesn't allow the same business name repeated in two languages, even when your storefront sign shows both. In a bilingual market like Ottawa and Gatineau, that one catches people.

And there's a reason owners keep stuffing names. Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey ranks keywords in the business name as the #3 map pack factor. Google knows it, which is why name spam was a big target in the 2026 Business Profile crackdown.

So what: most suspensions are self-inflicted. The fix starts with finding the rule you broke, not with the appeal button.

Soft vs hard suspension: which one do you have?

These two terms were coined by local SEO expert Joy Hawkins, not by Google, so don't expect a Google agent to use them. But they describe two very different problems, as Sterling Sky explains.

Soft
You see a suspended label in your dashboard, but the listing still shows on Maps. The public sees it as unclaimed or unverified. You can't edit it or reply to reviews.
Hard
The listing is removed from Google Search and Maps. Google's own help page confirms the public can't reach a removed profile.
What it signals
Soft means Google still believes your business exists. Hard means Google doubts it belongs on Maps at all.

Hard suspensions hurt fast. Sterling Sky describes a multi-location plumbing company that closed a location after a hard suspension dried up its calls.

There's hope, though. When Sterling Sky's own profile was wrongly suspended in 2021, it was fixed within a few days and rankings bounced back to where they were.

So what: a soft suspension is a warning shot. A hard suspension is a revenue emergency. Both deserve the same careful fix.

Google Business Profile suspended? Follow these reinstatement steps

Google's help page on fixing suspended profiles lays out the process. Here it is in plain order.

  1. Stop editing. And don't create a new profile for the same business. Google says not to while an appeal is under review.
  2. Read the reason. The appeals tool shows the restricted profile, the reason for the action and a link to the policy you broke.
  3. Fix the violation. Strip keywords from the name, hide the address if you're a service-area business, and replace redirecting links with your real website.
  4. Gather proof. Google lists business registration, a business licence, tax certificates and utility bills like electricity, phone, water or internet. The name and address must match the profile.
  5. Submit one appeal. Once you open the evidence form, you have 60 minutes to upload, or the files won't attach.
  6. Wait for the email. Google says decisions can take up to 5 business days and asks you not to file repeat appeals for the same issue.

Two extras help. Sterling Sky suggests adding real photos before you appeal, like your signage, your office and your branded vehicles. If Google says no, you can request an additional review with evidence you didn't send the first time.

If your whole Google account is restricted, the order changes. Appeal the account first from your Google Account restrictions page, then appeal the profile.

So what: one clean appeal with matching documents beats five angry ones.

How to avoid a suspension in the first place

Prevention is cheap. Run this list once a quarter.

  • Use your real-world name only, the same one on your sign, website and invoices.
  • Hide your address if customers don't visit you, and keep your service area within about 2 hours of driving.
  • Make one change a day, not ten. That's Sterling Sky's advice when you optimize a profile.
  • Use an email on your own domain for the primary owner, not a Gmail address.
  • Link your real website. No redirects, and no YouTube channel in the website field.
  • Check who has manager access. If Google removes an owner's account, it removes every location that account owns.

Whitespark's 2026 survey also flags new suspension risks, like keyword stuffing your description and AI-generated text or photos on the profile.

Suspension FAQ

How long does a Google Business Profile suspension last?

There's no set length. The suspension stays until you fix the problem and Google approves your appeal. Google says appeal decisions can take up to 5 business days.

Can I create a new profile if mine is suspended?

No. Google tells owners not to create a new Business Profile for the same business while an appeal is under review. A second profile also looks like a duplicate, which breaks the guidelines on its own.

What documents does Google accept for reinstatement?

Google lists official business registration, a business licence, tax certificates, and utility bills such as electricity, phone, water or internet. The business name and address on each document should match your profile.

Will my rankings come back after reinstatement?

Often, yes. Sterling Sky reported that rankings returned to their previous positions after both a soft and a hard suspension were reversed. Keep the profile clean afterwards, because repeat violations are harder to win.

Can keyword stuffing my business name get me suspended?

Yes. Google's guidelines say unnecessary information in your business name can lead to a suspension. That includes taglines, service keywords and locations that aren't part of your real-world name.
