The AI receptionist cost in Canada is lower than most owners think. Most published plans sit between $49 and $299 a month in 2026. But the sticker price is the least useful number on the page.
What matters is the meter. Some plans charge by the minute, some by the call, and some charge one flat fee. Pick the wrong one and a busy month gets expensive fast.
I went through the public pricing pages of five AI receptionist vendors in September 2026. Then I put them next to an Ottawa receptionist's wage and a live answering service. Here's what it really costs, and how to tell if it will pay for itself.
As of September 2026, most published AI receptionist plans cost $49 to $299 a month, and several bill in US dollars. A full-time Ottawa receptionist at the median wage costs about $3,467 a month before payroll costs, and covers 40 of the week's 168 hours. If one extra booked job a month is worth more than the plan, it pays.
AI Receptionist Cost in Canada: The 2026 Price Sheet

- $49 a month for 250 minutes, $149 for 1,000, or $299 for 2,000. Per-minute bundles.
- RingCentral
- $49 a month with 100 minutes, then $0.50 a minute, rounded up to the next 30 seconds.
- Goodcall
- $79, $129 or $249 a month with unlimited minutes. Then $0.50 per extra unique caller past 100, 250 or 500.
- Polaris Voice
- C$99 for 150 minutes, C$199 for 500, or C$299 for 1,500. Extra minutes cost $0.75 down to $0.30.
- Smith.ai
- Free for 25 calls, then $3.00 a call. Paid plans are $150 a month (about $2.00 a call) or $500 (about $1.67).
Hey Jodie, which sells to Canadian owners, lists a flat C$99 a month with unlimited minutes in its August 2026 guide. That's the simplest bill on this list.
Why is this so cheap now? The tech underneath got much cheaper this year, which we broke down in AI voice agents just got affordable. The catch is that cheap plans come with few minutes and little setup help.
Per Minute, Per Call or Flat: Pick Your Meter
Per-minute plans punish long calls. A caller asking about parking burns the same minutes as a caller booking a big job. RingCentral also rounds each call up to the next 30 seconds.
Per-call plans punish volume. Smith.ai counts every AI-answered call by default. It blocks known spammers and lets you remove up to 10% of calls as spam each billing cycle.
Flat plans don't move when you get busy. Goodcall lists unlimited minutes, but still charges once you pass a set number of unique callers. Read that line twice.
My take: if your phone rings every hour, buy flat or a big bundle. If it rings twice a week, don't pay for unlimited anything.
What about setup fees?
Most AI vendors don't list a separate setup fee. They fold setup into bigger tiers instead: Smith.ai lists dedicated onboarding on its paid plans, and Polaris lists white-glove setup on its top plan.
Human services vary. Ruby says it charges nothing for setup or onboarding, while AnswerConnect lists a $49.99 setup fee on some plans.
The real setup cost is your time. Someone has to write the greeting, load your FAQs and connect your calendar. A $49 plan with a bad script is just expensive voicemail.
AI vs a Receptionist vs an Answering Service
Start with the human. Job Bank puts the median receptionist wage in the Ottawa Region at $20.00 an hour, with most earning $17.60 to $28.62. That data comes from Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey.
Full time, that's $41,600 a year, or about $3,467 a month. Job Bank notes employers also pay things like CPP and EI contributions, vacation and sick days on top of wages. And Ontario's minimum wage goes from $17.60 to $17.95 an hour on October 1, 2026.
That person also covers just 40 of the week's 168 hours. Nights, weekends and lunch breaks still go to voicemail.
Live answering services sit in the middle. Ruby lists $250 a month for 50 minutes and $720 for 200. Smith.ai's human receptionists start at $300 for 30 calls, plus $11.50 per extra call and $1.50 a call to book appointments.
So AI wins on price by a mile. But that's the wrong fight for most owners. You're not choosing between AI and a person; you're choosing between AI and the calls you already miss.
How to Judge ROI Before You Sign
Skip the vendor ROI claims. Use three of your own numbers: missed calls a month, the share that would have booked, and what a booked job is worth.
If that number beats the plan price, it pays. If your average job is worth more than $299, one recovered call covers most plans on this list.
