Small Business Website Cost Canada: What You Really Pay in 2026

Search "website cost Canada" and the answers are all over the map. Here is what a small business website really costs in 2026, and which parts actually bring in work.

POSBOOKINGSCOMPETITORSPRICE

Search "website cost Canada" and you'll get answers all over the map. Some say free. Some quote the price of a used truck.

Both can be true. Neither helps you decide, because the real question isn't price. It's what you get back.

Here's the honest version for 2026: what DIY builders, freelancers and agencies charge, the costs that keep coming every month, and what decides whether a site brings in leads. I build these for Ottawa businesses, so I'll tell you where I'd spend and where I wouldn't.

Quick answer

As of September 2026, DIY builders run from US$19 a month on Squarespace or C$37 a month on Shopify Canada (billed yearly), plus your time. Freelancers and agencies charge by the hour or the project, so compare written quotes with the same scope. The best value is the site that loads fast, makes calling or booking easy, and gets every lead a quick reply.

Website cost Canada breakdown: DIY vs freelancer vs agency

There are three real ways to get a site built. Here's what each one costs you, in money and in time.

DIY builder
You pay a monthly plan and do the work. Squarespace lists plans from US$19 to US$99 a month billed annually. Shopify Canada lists Basic at C$37 a month billed yearly.
Freelancer
You pay for hours. Job Bank lists wages for web designers in the Ottawa region at $25.08 to $58.01 an hour. Expect freelance rates to sit higher, since freelancers cover their own tools and downtime.
Agency
You pay for a team: strategy, copy, design, build and support. Scope varies too much for a fair average, so get two or three written quotes for the same scope.
Ours (AGNT/01)
Our Starter build is $697 upfront plus $297 a month, as listed on agntone.ca. It's one option to compare, not the right fit for everyone.

So-what: the cheap site is the one that brings in leads. A free site that never rings your phone is the expensive one.

The ongoing costs nobody quotes you

The launch price is the smallest number you'll see. These keep coming:

  • Your domain. It renews every year. A .ca is only for people and businesses that meet CIRA's Canadian presence requirements. Register it in your business name, not your designer's.
  • Hosting or your builder plan. Squarespace says hosting comes with every plan, and annual plans include a free domain for the first year only.
  • Payment fees. If you sell online, Shopify Canada lists card rates from 2.8% + 30¢ on Basic.
  • Apps. Booking, reviews, chat and forms often cost extra each month.
  • Your time. New photos, new services, updated hours. If nobody does it, the site goes stale.

So-what: ask every quote for the 12-month total, not the launch price.

What actually drives leads (and what doesn't)

Owners pay for looks. Customers pay attention to speed and clarity.

  1. It loads fast on a phone. Test yours free on Google's PageSpeed Insights.
  2. Tap-to-call at the top of every page. Your number should never be a hunt.
  3. One clear action per page. Call, book or request a quote. Pick one.
  4. Fast replies to every form. Harvard Business Review research found most companies don't respond to online leads nearly fast enough. More in our lead response time breakdown.
  5. Plain words about your services, area and prices. That's also what AI search tools read. See our answer engine optimization guide.
  6. It matches your Google Business Profile. Same name, address and phone. Our Google Business Profile guide for Canada covers the rest.

What matters less: fancy animations, a 20-page site for a three-service business, and a new logo.

So-what: a website is a lead machine or a brochure. Only one of those pays for itself.

How to pick without getting burned

My rule of thumb for Canadian owners:

  • Just starting out: DIY. Spend the savings on your Google Business Profile and reviews.
  • Busy, but the site is slow or dated: a freelancer with a fixed price and a clear scope.
  • Leads matter more than looks: someone who builds booking, follow-up and tracking in, not just pages.

Before you sign, get four things in writing: who owns the domain, who owns the site, what the monthly fee covers, and how you leave.

Not sure where your current site stands? Run it through our free 60-second website roast. It pulls real PageSpeed and Google data.

So-what: the right build is the one you own, can update, and can measure.

Website Cost Canada: FAQ

How much does a small business website cost in Canada in 2026?

It depends on who builds it. As of September 2026, DIY builders start around US$19 a month on Squarespace or C$37 a month on Shopify Canada, billed yearly, plus your time. Freelancers and agencies charge by the hour or project, so compare written quotes with the same scope.

Is a .ca domain worth it for a Canadian business?

For a local business, usually yes. It signals you're Canadian, and .ca domains are reserved for people and organizations that meet CIRA's Canadian presence requirements. Register it in your business name.

What are the monthly costs of running a website?

Expect a builder or hosting plan, a yearly domain renewal, and any paid apps for booking, reviews or chat. If you sell online, add payment processing fees. Ask for a 12-month total before you commit.

Should I build my website myself or hire someone?

Build it yourself if you have time and a simple offer. Hire help if your hours are worth more on the job, or if you need booking, forms and tracking done properly. Either way, own your domain and your content.

What makes a small business website get more leads?

Speed on mobile, tap-to-call, one clear action per page, and fast replies to every form. Clear service and service-area pages help Google and AI search tools understand you.
